Monday March 30, 2009 (Day One)

The stabilization of intervals. "If you find . . . that all of the sudden, you become weak in [your intervals] . . . we don't become concerned. What we do is, we go back to the original drills that we had with those intervals, we review them, and we strengthen them." - D. L. Burge

Want to make sure that ear is SOLID!

Need to go back and work on these intervals.

1. Major 9th (confused wth Major 7th)
2. Major 7th (don't know it harmonically. Repeatedly missed.)
3. Minor 6th (confused it harmonically with P4).
4. Perfect 4th (why not solidify)
5. Major 2nd/Minor 2nd
6. Perfect Octave

GOAL: I am wanting to shoot for getting through this lesson without errors by May 10, 2009, working 45 min. a day.

April 5, 2008 (Day Four)

Unlocking Technique and sound rounds of Major Sevenths and Minor Sevenths. I am trying to reintroduce the sounds into my ears. As with all the intervals, it is so much easier going up than going down. Some random rounds as well.

Ultimately, I want these intervals so secure that I can jump around from m7 to M7 to P8, up and down, without skipping a beat.

Tomorrow: More sound rounds. Spelling tests on both. More random rounds.

April 4, 2008 (Day Three)

Started out with the unlocking technique. It seems I have the mist difficult time with hearing the notes in the middle. I will continue, of course.

Sound round and ground rounds of Minor Sevenths and Major Sevenths. It seems that I can handle the sounds on their own for the most part, but when they are mixed together, I get lost. By the end, it all started to sound the same, and I couldn't quite distinguish between m7, M7, & PO. Good light overload for the ear.

Tomorrow: Do more unlocking technique, spelling tests for both m7 and M7. And some random rounds with mixed m7 and M7.

April 3, 2008 (Day Two)

Unlocking Technique.

Re-took Major Second sound test.
Lightning Rounds - Melodic and Harmonic Seconds
Lightning Round: Mixed P5, P4, M3, m3, M2, m2, Perfect Octaves, and Perfect Unisons

Tomorrow: Will practice unlocking technique and do ground rounds and practice rounds of Major and Minor Sevenths.

Observations: My voice is pretty rusty, but my ears are getting better. When I took the sound test, I found myself singing the correct pitch, but either a little sharp or a little flat, then hearing it was out of tune, and correcting it before time was called. (Gotta work on my voice!)

Also, I could hear some of the pitches I know from perfect pitch training (At one point during a lightning round, he played D to E). That's exciting.

I had a sense I could feel the differences better between the seconds than I did when I first learned, though my ears did get a little fatigued after awhile, as Burge mentioned they might.

Pretty excited about filling in the cracks of my musical knowledge. At this point, I don't care how long it takes, I am just going to do it a little bit every day. I am trying to be zen about it, letting go and welcoming errors so I can learn ear training even more thoroughly, as opposed to freaking out about passing so I can finish the course by such-and-such date. It's more fun this way.

Another thing I am trying to "let go" about is my temptation to unlock the harmonic sounds so I can be sure I get it right. Today, I mostly just relaxed, listened to the sound, and gave my first impression. If there was any hesitancy, though, I found my ear unlocking it before I had a chance to think. I guess this is what I'd desire in a practical musical situation - "lightning" recognition first, then an ability to "decode."

April 2, 2008 - Introductory Goals (Day 001)

I am currently on Lesson 23 "Lightning Round: All Mixed (9:06)."

I would like to graduate to Level Four in the next six weeks. That is a relaxed, achievable goal. Regardless, I am going to correctly practice everyday.

I am at the phase now where I need to stabilize all of my intervals.

For tomorrow's - and subsequent days - homework, I will need to review the following intervals.

1. Major 2nd
2. Major 6th
3. Major 7th
4. Augmented 4th
5. Major 9th

Stabilization Procedure from Lesson 21

New Procedure from lesson 21

No listening errors in lightning rounds from now on.

Procedure

1. Retake test again for sound
2. Retake first subsequent lightning round comparing the two intervals (e.g. M6/m6)
3. Retake first subsequent lightning round incorporating that interval into the otherslearned thus far.

Spelling error:

1. Retake the spelling test for that interval.
